ESA and Mistral AI team up to boost European space tech

On September 16th in Paris, the European Space Agency and Mistral AI formalized a deepened collaboration with the signing of a Letter of Intent. This partnership unites Mistral, a major European player in the global AI landscape, with ESA’s extensive space engineering and scientific expertise. The two organizations will focus on applying artificial intelligence to tasks ranging from processing Earth observation data to supporting mission design, with a shared goal of strengthening European technological leadership. “Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming a key capability for the future of space,” said ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher.

Mistral AI and ESA Expand Collaboration on European Space Technology

The deepened collaboration between ESA and Mistral AI extends to exploring secure deployment of AI capabilities on European infrastructure, with a focus on data protection and system resilience. This commitment addresses growing concerns about sovereignty in the rapidly evolving AI landscape, ensuring European control over critical space technologies and data streams. Both organizations will examine approaches to safeguard sensitive information while using advanced AI models for space applications.

Mistral’s expertise will be applied to enhance ESA’s existing initiatives, including Orbit and EVE, building upon prior successes in secure AI assistance for engineering and Earth observation. Orbit, a secure AI assistant, already supports engineering activities, while EVE, developed through ESA’s Φ-lab, specializes in analyzing Earth observation data.

The Letter of Intent signed on September 16th in Paris formalizes a plan to integrate Mistral’s customizable AI stack with ESA’s industrial engineering expertise, aiming to transform raw data into impactful services for the space industry. “We’re proud to deepen our partnership with ESA,” said Arthur Mensch, co-founder and CEO of Mistral. The organizations will focus on developing AI solutions that support, rather than replace, human-led technical decision-making, emphasizing a collaborative approach to innovation.

He further explained that this strategic cooperation with Mistral reinforces Europe’s technological leadership and resilience. The framework outlined in the Letter of Intent will guide the exploration of Mistral’s models, cloud infrastructure and technical capabilities across areas like Earth observation, advanced AI for space, and skills development.
