Baden-Württemberg is accepting project ideas through its “Challenge the Quantum Technologies” call, inviting academic research institutions to tackle 13 challenges in quantum sensing and quantum networks. Eligible applicants, limited to one submission per institute, must propose research and development projects directly addressing these user challenges, with funding awarded as non-repayable grants. Approved projects, beginning on March 1, 2027, will have up to 12 months to realize feasibility concepts, prototypes, or modify existing demonstrators, using 3 million euros in state funds.
Baden-Württemberg’s “Challenge the Quantum Technologies” Call for Proposals
Researchers can now access 13 specific user challenges as part of Baden-Württemberg’s “Challenge the Quantum Technologies” initiative, a Transfer-Booster Challenge designed to accelerate quantum technology development. These challenges, focusing on quantum sensing and quantum networks, are available online and form the basis for project proposals eligible for funding. Academic research institutions within Baden-Württemberg receiving state or federal funding may submit one proposal per institute, with proposals due by 8 November 2026.
The program expects teams to complete these projects within a maximum of 12 months, beginning on March 1, 2027. Proposals must relate directly to one of the published challenges. While companies do not receive direct funding, they can participate in projects either through self-funding or as commissioned partners to academic institutions. The initiative prioritizes science-driven research and development, aiming to bridge the gap between theoretical advancements and practical applications.
Submitting more than one application per research institute will result in the disqualification of all submissions from that institute, reinforcing the focus on concentrated, impactful proposals.
A total of 3 million euros of state funds is available for the Transfer-Booster Challenge, and each project can receive up to 500,000 euros for up to 12 months. The call is part of the QuantumBW programme and is funded by Baden-Württemberg’s Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts.
