Over 100 companies are now part of a growing defence technology ecosystem centered in Otaniemi, Espoo, establishing a concentration of deep-tech expertise in the Helsinki region. Companies like ICEYE, a leader in synthetic aperture radar satellite technology, and IQM, a European quantum computing firm, are central to this Defence Tech Hub, indicating a focus beyond general defence applications. VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland is facilitating a NATO DIANA accelerator and test centre in Otaniemi, in partnership with DEFINE, to foster development of crucial technologies.
ICEYE & IQM Anchor Helsinki’s Expanding Defence Tech Hub
The hub consolidates operations within the Helsinki region, specifically in Otaniemi, Espoo, uniting over 100 companies focused on both civilian and defence applications. This geographic focus facilitates collaboration and streamlines access to critical infrastructure for a growing network of deep-tech innovators. The Defence Tech Hub’s scope extends beyond radar and quantum technologies to encompass sectors like satellite communications, sensors, artificial intelligence, and autonomous systems.
This centre will focus on emerging technologies identified as strategically important for NATO’s defence and security, providing companies with training and support to pursue business opportunities within the sector. The concentration of companies in Otaniemi provides access to specialized facilities, including security-classified areas, cleanroom infrastructure, and advanced testing capabilities.
Technopolis CEO Niko Pulli describes this environment as offering a highly connected space where collaboration across the defence and security ecosystem is practical and efficient. Jaana Tuomi, CEO of Enter Espoo, noted the unexpectedly high level of interest in the hub, and Jarno Limnéll, Chairperson of Espoo City Council, emphasized the importance of this ecosystem for both national security and European technological sovereignty, stating, Mikko Salomaa, Vice President, Defence, VTT, further explained that VTT’s expertise and infrastructure help defence actors develop new, secure systems, allowing for anticipation of future needs and accelerated cooperation.
