IonQ has received final regulatory approval to acquire SkyWater Technology, the largest exclusively U.S.-based semiconductor foundry. The deal, first announced in January 2026, is expected to finalize on July 31, 2026, and will secure a domestic supply chain for IonQ’s quantum computers. IonQ states the acquisition will accelerate its quantum computing roadmap and support the company’s chip-focused manufacturing approach. IonQ plans to host an investor day on September 8 to discuss the integration of SkyWater and its impact on future development.
IonQ is set to become one of the few quantum computing companies to directly own a semiconductor manufacturing facility, finalizing its acquisition of SkyWater Technology on July 31, 2026. SkyWater Technology is the largest semiconductor foundry operating entirely within the United States, a critical detail for IonQ’s strategy to onshore its quantum chip production, which is uncommon in the industry. This move addresses supply chain vulnerabilities and supports IonQ’s ambition to build a scalable domestic manufacturing base for future quantum computer generations.
Following the close, SkyWater will maintain its role as a U.S.-based foundry, serving existing customers while operating as a wholly owned IonQ subsidiary under the same name. The combined company will report its second quarter earnings on August 5, after U.S. markets close, providing further insight into the financial implications of this acquisition.
