Quantum Design gives UCLA lab access to a ProteoxS fridge

Professor Chee Wei Wong of the University of California, Los Angeles, is developing two superconducting qubit-based quantum computers, one at UCLA and a matched system at Quantum Design’s San Diego headquarters. This collaboration grants Professor Wong’s research group access to a ProteoxS dilution refrigerator at Quantum Design, where they will pursue 99.9% fidelity for 2-qubit operations. “Physical access to the Quantum Design laboratory is key for my students to gain experience and knowledge of a production environment,” said Professor Chee Wei Wong, emphasizing the partnership’s focus on workforce development within California’s growing quantum ecosystem.

ProteoxS Dilution Refrigerator Enables Wong Group’s Qubit Research

This collaboration directly supports the pursuit of 99.9% fidelity for 2-qubit operations, a key performance goal for the research team as they develop superconducting qubit-based quantum computers. The refrigerator’s availability will allow for enhanced sample support architecture tailored to the Wong Group’s qubit chips, furthering their experimental capabilities. The partnership extends beyond equipment access, encouraging a connection between academic research and industrial practices. Dr. Stefano Spagna, Senior Vice President of Strategic Initiatives at Quantum Design, highlighted the broader impact of the collaboration.

He said, “Founded in California in 1982, Quantum Design has developed quantum sensing and cryogenic measurement technologies, establishing a legacy of innovation that continues to define our company.” Spagna continued, “We are honored to collaborate with Professor Chee Wei Wong, a leader in superconducting qubit-based quantum processors. This partnership will advance the Southern California Quantum Alliance (SQA) quantum computing ecosystem, accelerating scientific discovery, workforce development, and commercial applications.” The collaboration aims to strengthen the quantum computing ecosystem in Southern California and beyond.

We look forward to groundbreaking achievements that will help shape the future of quantum computing in Southern California and beyond.

Rusty is a quantum science nerd. He's been into academic science all his life, but spent his formative years doing less academic things. Now he turns his attention to write about his passion, the quantum realm. He loves all things Quantum Physics especially. Rusty likes the more esoteric side of Quantum Computing and the Quantum world. Everything from Quantum Entanglement to Quantum Physics. Rusty thinks that we are in the 1950s quantum equivalent of the classical computing world. While other quantum journalists focus on IBM's latest chip or which startup just raised $50 million, Rusty's over here writing 3,000-word deep dives on whether quantum entanglement might explain why you sometimes think about someone right before they text you. (Spoiler: it doesn't, but the exploration is fascinating)
