New Mexico funds target utility-scale quantum by 2033

New Mexico has committed over $450 million to quantum technology infrastructure and workforce development and is now incentivizing companies to perform work within the state related to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency’s Quantum Benchmarking Initiative Stage C. The state’s Technology and Innovation Office has added QBI Stage C, and the Army Research Office and NSA Laboratory for Physical SciencesQuantumEAGLe initiative, to its list of priority federal programs eligible for matching funds. This funding aims to accelerate the transition from noisy, error-prone quantum processors to highly reliable systems and support the launch of utility-scale quantum computing by 2033. “New Mexico is positioning itself as a leader in quantum technology, and we’re backing that up with investment,” said TIO Director Nora Meyers Sackett.

DARPA’s QBI Stage C Funding Attracts New Mexico Matching Grants

This builds upon New Mexico’s existing investment exceeding $450 million in quantum technology infrastructure and workforce development, solidifying its position as a growing national hub. The initiative aims to accelerate progress toward launching utility-scale quantum computing by 2033, a goal central to DARPA’s QBI Stage C. This expansion leverages the state’s universities, private sector innovators, and national laboratories to support ambitious quantum goals.

TIO Director Nora Meyers Sackett stated, “We’re investing in the future and ensuring that the companies helping to build it can grow and scale right here.” The Targeted Federal Match grant is available to New Mexico public entities and businesses, with applications reviewed on a rolling basis and a 20-working-day turnaround for complete submissions; eligibility depends on the federal funder’s established merit review process, allowing for accelerated project selection without compromising scientific rigor.

We’re investing in the future and ensuring that the companies helping to build it can grow and scale right here.
