UCLA will lead a regional initiative to bolster Southern California’s quantum technology sector with a $9.74 million investment from the California Jobs First Regional Investment Initiative. The funding supports the SoCal Quantum Alliance for Development, or SQUAD, spanning Los Angeles, Orange County and the San Diego region, to coordinate university, industry and workforce development efforts.
The project will center around the Quantum Innovation Hub at UCLA Research Park, physically uniting this growing field. “Southern California has extraordinary strengths in quantum science, engineering and technology,” said David Steuerman, executive director of the UCLA Center for Quantum Science and Engineering; “This investment gives us an opportunity to connect those strengths across the region.”
SoCal Quantum Alliance Receives $9.7 Million California Jobs First Investment
The California Jobs First investment of $9.74 million will support the SoCal Quantum Alliance for Development. Chee Wei Wong, UCLA professor of electrical and computer engineering and co-director of the Quantum Innovation Hub, is also involved, as is Barak Bussel, chair of the CQSE Strategic Board. These partnerships, which include UC Berkeley, will be expanded to create pathways into quantum careers and accelerate the transition of quantum technologies from research into practical applications.
This investment builds upon over a decade of quantum science and engineering leadership at UCLA, originating from the UCLA College’s Division of Physical Sciences and the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering. The project’s focus extends beyond academic research, prioritizing the development of a skilled workforce and encouraging connections with industry partners to ensure sustained growth in the quantum sector.
