Galaxy Commits $5M to Bitcoin’s Quantum-Era Security

Galaxy is committing up to $5 million in developer grants as part of a new initiative designed to proactively defend Bitcoin against the future threat of quantum computing. Recognizing that Bitcoin’s underlying cryptography could be vulnerable to a sufficiently powerful quantum computer, the company is establishing a Quantum Advisory Council and launching a dedicated research program to address this challenge. This move comes as the National Institute of Standards and Technology finalized its first post-quantum cryptography standards in 2024, and with a federal deadline of 2031 to secure systems against quantum attacks. “As leaders in the digital assets space, we believe it’s important to help be part of the solution to any potential threat quantum computing poses to Bitcoin,” said Mike Novogratz, Founder and CEO of Galaxy, emphasizing a commitment to long-term security for the cryptocurrency.

Developer Grants for Post-Quantum Bitcoin Solutions

This initiative directly addresses a defined timeline, spurred by a recent executive order establishing a 2031 deadline for the federal government to defend against quantum attacks on existing cryptographic systems. Galaxy’s grant program prioritizes several key areas, including the implementation and review of quantum-resistant transaction proposals and the development of post-quantum signature schemes for Bitcoin, recognizing that protocol upgrades require significant time for design, review, testing, and deployment within the decentralized Bitcoin ecosystem.

Currently, the number of developers actively working on quantum resilience for Bitcoin is limited given the scope of the challenge, a gap Galaxy intends to address through milestone-based grant funding; interested parties can apply by emailing [email protected]. Sanders stated, “I’m proud to advise Galaxy as it takes a leadership role in that effort,” acknowledging the growing need for preparedness across industries. The company also intends to publish ongoing analysis through Galaxy Research, aiming to provide accessible information for institutional investors, policymakers, and the broader developer community, and welcomes co-funding and contributions from other stakeholders in the field.

This funding stream directly addresses a critical bottleneck in Bitcoin’s quantum preparedness, as developers currently engaged in building quantum resilience are comparatively few given the scale of the challenge. The initiative’s structure is built around three core pillars, beginning with a Developer Grant Program focused on practical implementation of quantum-resistant transaction proposals, integration of post-quantum signature schemes, and essential security audits. Applications for these grants are being accepted immediately, with funds disbursed based on pre-defined milestones. Complementing the grant program is a dedicated research effort through Galaxy Research, designed to provide accessible analysis of the quantum threat and the evolving landscape of mitigation strategies for institutional investors and policymakers. “Quantum timelines continue to compress, and governments and industries worldwide are moving to prepare for potential implications; Bitcoin should be no exception,” said Sanders.
