This collaboration, launched on February 3, 2026, will focus on translating fundamental quantum research from the Department of Physics into real-world applications. By leveraging IonQ’s capabilities, researchers aim to accelerate the development of practical quantum solutions, bridging the gap between theory and tangible results. This partnership signifies a major step towards realizing the potential of quantum computing, promising advancements across multiple scientific disciplines.
Cavendish Laboratory & FormationQ Initiate Quantum Program
Researchers will initially focus on materials science and computational chemistry, areas where quantum computing promises substantial advancements beyond classical capabilities. FormationQ, a company specializing in quantum software and application development, will contribute its expertise in translating algorithms into executable code for IonQ’s trapped-ion quantum computers. A key objective is to demonstrate quantum advantage – solving problems that are intractable for even the most powerful supercomputers – within the next 24 months. According to Professor Andrew Daley, Head of the Cavendish Laboratory’s Theory of Quantum Systems group, “This collaboration allows us to bridge the gap between fundamental research and real-world applications of quantum technology,” emphasizing the program’s translational focus. The partnership aims to foster a new generation of quantum-literate scientists and engineers.
IonQ Technology Platform Powers Applied Quantum Research
The University of Cambridge’s renowned Cavendish Laboratory is joining forces with FormationQ to establish an applied quantum research program underpinned by IonQ’s quantum computing technology, beginning February 3, 2026. The program will utilize IonQ Forte, boasting 32 algorithmic qubits, alongside IonQ’s Aria system, offering access to a total of 79 qubits—a substantial resource for complex calculations. FormationQ is contributing a $2.5 million investment to facilitate the project, providing critical funding for equipment and personnel. “This is a really exciting opportunity to work with world-leading researchers at the Cavendish Laboratory and accelerate the development of practical quantum applications,” said Dr.
