IonQ Acquires Capella Space to Pioneer Quantum-Secure Communications

IonQ (NYSE: IONQ) completed the acquisition of space technology firm Capella Space, positioning the combined entity to develop a space-based quantum key distribution (QKD) network. The move integrates Capella’s satellite infrastructure with IonQ’s quantum technology, aiming to provide secure communications and a platform for quantum networking and sensing. IonQ anticipates the network will enable secure transmission of encryption keys and serve commercial, defence, and intelligence applications, building on existing agreements with ARLIS and the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory.

The acquisition of Capella Space positions IonQ to pioneer the first global space-based quantum key distribution network, integrating Capella’s satellite infrastructure with IonQ’s quantum technology.

This completed acquisition enables the development of secure communications, preventing encryption keys from being intercepted or copied without detection, and will also serve as a platform for further growth in quantum networking and sensing.

Capella customers will have access to rapid, ultra-secure synthetic aperture radar and remote sensing through the first quantum-enabled Earth observation platform.

This acquisition, alongside a previously announced agreement with ID Quantique, strengthens IonQ’s position in advancing quantum networking technologies essential for building the quantum internet, building on recent quantum networking contracts with the Applied Research Laboratory for Intelligence and Security and the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory.

The acquisition supports IonQ’s mission to develop the world’s first space-to-space and space-to-ground satellite quantum key distribution network. This network will enable secure communications and also serve as a platform for further growth in quantum networking and sensing. The integration of Capella’s advanced space-based platform and deployed satellite constellation, alongside IonQ’s quantum technologies, is expected to bolster commercial applications, global defence, and intelligence missions.

IonQ’s advancements in quantum networking also position the company as a leader in building the quantum internet. The company’s innovative technology and rapid growth were recognised in Newsweek’s 2025 Excellence Index 1000, Forbes’ 2025 Most Successful Mid-Cap Companies list, and Built In’s 2025 100 Best Midsize Places to Work in Washington, DC and Seattle. IonQ intends to deliver the world’s most powerful quantum computers with 2 million qubits by 2030, to accelerate innovation in drug discovery, materials science, financial modelling, logistics, cybersecurity, and defence. Available through all major cloud providers, IonQ is making quantum computing more accessible and impactful.
