The UK’s National Quantum Computing Centre (NQCC) has launched the Quantum Computing Access Programme, which provides researchers with access to cutting-edge quantum computing resources for research, skill development, and application development. The programme is part of the NQCC’s ‘SparQ’ initiative, which aims to support UK quantum readiness.
Through this programme, users will have cloud-based access to a range of quantum computing providers, including Azure Quantum, AWS Braket, IBM Quantum, D-Wave Leap, IonQ, Rigetti, IQM, and Quera. Successful applicants will be allocated an initial three-month access period, with the possibility of extension.
The NQCC invites expressions of interest from academic community users, with submissions due by November 25, 2024. This program marks a significant step forward in the UK’s quantum computing landscape, and its impact is expected to be felt across various industries and fields of research.
Quantum Computing Access Programme: Unlocking UK’s Quantum Potential
The National Quantum Computing Centre (NQCC) has launched the Quantum Computing Access Programme, a pioneering initiative aimed at providing access to quantum computing resources for the UK’s quantum computing user community. This programme is designed to support research, skill development, and application development in the field of quantum computing.
Programme Overview
The Quantum Computing Access Programme offers dedicated streams for specific user groups, facilitating cloud access to quantum computing resources from various providers. Initially, successful applicants will be granted access for three months with a set allocation. The programme is part of the NQCC’s ‘SparQ’ initiative, which aims to support UK quantum readiness.
Available Quantum Computing Resources
The program provides access to a diverse range of quantum computing resources, including:
- Azure Quantum
- AWS Braket
- IBM Quantum
- D-Wave Leap
- IonQ
- Rigetti
- IQM
- Quera
- IBM
- Microsoft and backend simulators
These resources will enable users to explore the vast potential of quantum computing, from research and development to practical applications.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the programme, applicants must meet certain criteria:
- The use of quantum computing resources must be in support of a project or activity conducted at a UK university and delivered in the UK.
- Lead applicants and project/activity participants must be registered at a UK university.
- Lead applicants must confirm that they have paid due diligence to the trusted research guidelines outlined by the NQCC.
Additionally, quantum computing resource suppliers may impose additional terms and conditions.
Important Dates and Application Process
The call for expressions of interest (EOI) opened on November 8, 2024, and will close on November 25, 2024. Applicants should complete the online EOI response form by the deadline, providing a high-level overview of their proposed activity, resource requirements, and affiliation.
The NQCC will then assess demand and invite applicants to submit a proposal for formal review, which will ultimately award access in Q1 2025.
Guidance for Applicants
When submitting an EOI, applicants should provide a concise overview of their proposed project or activity, including:
- A brief description of the project or activity
- An indication of the resource requirements
- The affiliation of the applicant and team
By providing this information, applicants will enable the NQCC to assess demand and allocate resources effectively.
