Screenwriter Argues AI Threatens Storytelling in Hollywood

A growing apprehension amongst screenwriters centres on the potential displacement of human creativity by artificial intelligence. Oscar-nominated screenwriter Billy Ray articulates a concern that extends beyond mere professional security, framing generative AI not as a tool akin to established software like Final Draft, but as an “existential threat” to the craft of storytelling itself. This perspective positions AI as fundamentally different from previous technological advancements in filmmaking, suggesting a qualitative shift in the creative process.

Ray’s anxieties stem from the pervasive integration of AI across multiple stages of production, encompassing script development, previsualization, casting, and marketing. He views this encroachment as an erosion of the storyteller’s role, exacerbating existing feelings of self-doubt and professional insecurity. Since its launch in November 2022, ChatGPT has garnered hundreds of millions of users, demonstrating a widespread adoption of AI-driven text generation for diverse applications, ranging from commonplace tasks like composing wedding toasts to more creative, albeit often criticised, endeavours such as poetry. This widespread use, according to Ray, underscores the potential for AI to devalue human authorship and diminish the artistic contribution of screenwriters. The core of his argument rests on the belief that audiences deserve transparency regarding the origin of creative content, specifically whether a work is the product of human or artificial intelligence.
