The National Science Foundation has awarded $5 million over five years to the University of California, Davis, to establish the Artificial Intelligence Institutes Virtual Organization (AIVO) as a community hub for federally funded AI institutes. Initiated as a virtual organisation supported by the NSF and staff from the Artificial Intelligence Institute for Next Generation Food Systems (AIFS) at UC Davis – one of seven original institutes announced in August 2020 – AIVO will facilitate cross-institute collaboration and promote public-private partnerships. In addition to NSF funding, AIVO received $1.75 million in December 2024 from Google.org to support AI education initiatives, including curriculum development for K-16 education and workforce training. The overall AI Institutes program is led by the NSF, while AIFS receives funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute for Food and Agriculture.
AIVO will serve as an NSF-branded community hub that coordinates activities among federal AI institutes, organizes leadership summits, facilitates cross-institute connections, and develops public-private partnerships. The organization aims to promote university-based AI research and its applications for societal benefit.
Previously operating as a virtual organization with NSF support through UC Davis’s AI Institute for Next Generation Food Systems (AIFS), AIVO has now secured official status and expanded funding. The organization also received $1.75 million from Google.org in December 2024 to support various AI education initiatives, including curriculum development for K-16 students, workforce training, and summer programs for teachers and students.
UC Davis’s AIFS, which has been managing AIVO, was one of the seven original AI institutes established in August 2020 under the broader AI Institutes program led by NSF and funded by the USDA’s National Institute for Food and Agriculture.
