The European Space Agency (ESA) is spotlighting the achievements of women at the forefront of European science and technology this International Day of Women and Girls in Science, joining forces with organizations across the EIROforum network. A striking collage features seven leading STEM professionals – including ESA astronaut Sophie Adenot – from facilities like CERN, EMBL, and the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility, showcasing the breadth of female talent driving innovation. These women, including predoctoral fellow Soraya Zwahlen and Group Leader Dr Sara Casalbuoni, exemplify the power of collaboration and inclusivity. Their collective experiences, ESA highlights, underscore a critical message: “Together, their experiences and words of wisdom underscore the importance of community, mutual support and inclusive practices in closing the gender gap in STEM.”
EIROforum Celebrates Women in European Science
This visual representation aims to amplify the voices of those often underrepresented in STEM fields. Asar Jaradat, a Marie Skłodowska-Curie PhD Fellow at CERN, and Dr Sara Casalbuoni, Group Leader for Undulator Systems at European XFEL, further exemplify this diversity.
STEM Professionals Featured: Zwahlen, Jaradat, Torres & Others
The collaborative initiative spotlighting women in STEM reveals a broad spectrum of expertise across European research institutions. Cristina González Torres, a Survey and Alignment Engineer at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF), contributes to advancements in synchrotron technology, while Paula Sánchez Sáez supports astronomical research as a User Support Astronomer at the European Southern Observatory (ESO). Dr Sara Casalbuoni leads the Undulator Systems group at European XFEL, focusing on the development of crucial components for X-ray research, and Giuliana Manzin heads the Design and Calculation Office at the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), driving innovation in neutron science.
This diverse group, alongside ESA astronaut Sophie Adenot, demonstrates the multifaceted nature of contemporary STEM fields. The featured professionals represent institutions including the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), where Soraya Zwahlen is a predoctoral fellow, and CERN, where Asar Jaradat is pursuing a PhD as a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow.
To mark the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, ESA joined organisations across the EIROforum network to celebrate the diversity of women shaping science and technology in Europe.
