Quantum Brilliance and Pawsey Supercomputing Center Make History with First On-Prem Quantum Computer and Supercomputer Algorithm Run

On April 18, 2023, the Pawsey Supercomputing Center, an internationally recognized research facility located in Perth, Western Australia, announced a significant milestone in quantum computing. Working in partnership with Quantum Brilliance, the center successfully ran its first quantum algorithm on a room-temperature diamond-based system installed at the center, marking the first instance of an algorithm run from a supercomputer connected to an on-prem quantum computer.

This achievement holds particular significance because it further validates the capacity for hybrid quantum and classical computing models to solve complex challenges collaboratively. It also confirms the potential for using room-temperature quantum computers in practical, real-world settings.

The Pawsey Supercomputing Research Center represents an unincorporated joint venture between multiple Australian universities, including CSIRO, Curtin University, Edith Cowan University, Murdoch University, and The University of Western Australia. The center has received support from the Western Australian and federal governments and serves as one of two tier-1 high-performance computing facilities in Australia.

As a research center, the Pawsey Supercomputing Research Center primarily focuses on accelerating scientific research for the nation’s benefit. The center offers extensive services and expertise in supercomputing, data, cloud services, and visualization. These capabilities enable researchers across a diverse range of domains, including but not limited to astronomy, life sciences, medicine, energy, resources, and artificial intelligence.

Established in 2019, Quantum Brilliance is a promising venture-backed company dedicated to creating innovative quantum products and solutions centered around diamond quantum computers, supported by cutting-edge software and applications. The company’s overarching objective is to facilitate the widespread deployment of its quantum technology to drive a range of industries forward, enabling them to harness the potential of edge computing applications and next-generation supercomputers.
