A new alliance of European universities, OpenEU, has been launched to promote innovation and digital transformation in higher education. The alliance consists of 14 universities from across Europe, as well as 13 associate partner bodies and organizations. The core members include eight leading online, open, and distance universities, alongside two on-campus universities.
The alliance aims to achieve ten targets over the next four years, including building a solid and sustainable European open university, promoting innovation in curricula and course delivery, and widening participation of underrepresented groups in higher education.
Key organizations involved in the initiative include the European Association of Distance Teaching Universities, the International Association of Universities, and the Mediterranean Universities Union. Industrial associations and national and European clusters, such as Brightlands Smart Services Campus from the Netherlands and Bulgaria’s Hubbik platform, are also participating.
Anna Sánchez-Juárez is a key contact for OpenEU. The Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) is one of the leading universities involved in the initiative, with a focus on online learning innovations and open knowledge.
The European Universities initiative, launched by the European Commission, seeks to foster unprecedented levels of institutional cooperation between higher education institutions. With 64 alliances already established, involving over 500 institutions, this project is poised to revolutionize the way we approach higher education in Europe.
OpenEU, led by the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC), takes a bold step forward by putting open and distance higher education at the forefront of its strategy. By doing so, it aims to increase access, coverage, and participation in higher education across Europe.
The UOC’s research and innovation focus on the intersection of technology and human & social sciences, with a specific emphasis on the network society, e-learning, and e-health. With over 500 researchers and more than 50 research groups working together, this institution is well-positioned to tackle some of the most pressing challenges facing global societies today.
