Xanadu Collaborates With University Of Maryland National Quantum Lab To Advance Quantum Computing Innovations

The University of Maryland (UMD) has partnered with quantum computing firm Xanadu to foster innovation, workforce development, and commercialization across Maryland and the Mid-Atlantic region. This three-year collaboration makes Xanadu an industry partner at UMD’s National Quantum Laboratory (QLab), where it will provide access to its software tools, including PennyLane and advanced photonic quantum technologies.

Building on UMD’s 35+ year leadership in quantum information science, the partnership supports programs like the Quantum Machine Learning First-Year Immersive Research Experience for students and the Quantum Startup Foundry for entrepreneurs. Both entities aim to make quantum computing accessible and impactful, aligning their efforts to advance this transformative technology.

From Xanadu’s perspective, the partnership aligns perfectly with its mission to make quantum computing accessible and beneficial to people everywhere. By collaborating with UMD, Xanadu gains access to a wealth of research talent and a dynamic environment for product development.

“Xanadu’s mission to deliver useful and accessible quantum computers aligns seamlessly with UMD’s educational and research goals,” said Christian Weedbrook, CEO of Xanadu. “Together, we are advancing quantum science and technologies that will benefit industries not just in Maryland, the United States, and globally.”

The implications of this partnership extend far beyond the immediate benefits to UMD and Xanadu. The collaboration has the potential to unlock the transformative power of quantum computing in a wide range of industries, including pharmaceuticals, energy, national defense, and beyond. By fostering collaborative education, joint research, and market acceleration activities, the partnership will solidify the UMD-led Capital of Quantum as a leading global center for quantum information science and technology.
