Welinq Unveils World-First Quantum Memory For Scalable Data Centers

Welinq, a Paris-based quantum networking company spun out of Sorbonne University, CNRS, and PSL-University, has launched a cutting-edge quantum memory solution designed for scalable quantum data centres.

This fully integrated system boasts over 90% efficiency in storing and retrieving single photons, with storage durations of up to 200 microseconds. It is all within a compact, standard industrial rack design that operates at room temperature using neutral atoms trapped by laser beams.

This innovation enables quantum processors to network, forming scalable architectures for advancing quantum computing beyond individual units. The solution is poised to drive advancements across industries such as cybersecurity, energy, and healthcare, marking a significant step toward realizing the potential of large-scale quantum technologies.

Key Features of Welinq’s Quantum Memory

Welinq’s new product is a fully integrated, plug-and-play system for quantum data centres and communication networks. It offers:

  • Over 90% efficiency in on-demand single-photon storage and retrieval—the highest ever recorded for quantum memory.
  • Storage durations of up to 200 microseconds, enabling reliable entanglement distribution.
  • A compact 19-inch rack-mountable design ensures easy integration into existing systems.
  • Room-temperature operation, utilizing neutral-atom technology to eliminate the need for cryogenic cooling.

Enabling Large-Scale Quantum Computing

Currently, quantum processors operate in isolation, limiting their computational capabilities. Welinq’s memory allows multiple quantum processors to work together, forming distributed quantum architectures essential for scaling beyond single QPUs. Its applications include:

  • Quantum buffering for entanglement distribution and qubit synchronization across processors.
  • Secure quantum communications, supporting large-scale quantum networks and the quantum internet.

Building the Quantum Data Centers of the Future

Welinq has begun deploying its quantum memory across Europe, accelerating the industrialization of quantum networking. The company is also advancing software solutions, such as the araQne quantum compiler, which optimizes algorithm partitioning across networked processors.

Beyond technology, Welinq is fostering an ecosystem for distributed quantum computing. Recent partnerships with Pasqal, Quandela, and QphoX and the AQADOC initiative highlight its leadership in quantum networking.

Tom Darras, CEO and co-founder of Welinq, stated:
“Quantum technologies need the right infrastructure, and we are building it. Our quantum memory is a cornerstone of the quantum revolution.”
