Vault12 Releases Open-Source Quantum-Safe Data Storage Plugin

Vault12, Inc. has announced the open-source release of a Capacitor plugin implementing Shamir’s Secret Sharing for quantum-safe data storage across iOS, Android, and web applications. This plugin leverages information-theoretic security—protection based on mathematical impossibility—by splitting sensitive data into multiple cryptographic shards with a configurable threshold for reconstruction. Battle-tested in production for a decade on nearly a million devices as a core component of Vault12 Guard, the Shamir Secret Sharing plugin for Capacitor enables developers to build applications resilient to threats posed by advancing quantum computing capabilities and eliminates single points of failure.

Shamir’s Secret Sharing Plugin for Capacitor

Vault12 has released an open-source Capacitor plugin enabling quantum-safe data storage for iOS, Android, and web applications. This plugin utilizes Shamir’s Secret Sharing (SSS), a method devised by Adi Shamir, to split sensitive data into multiple “shares.” A configurable threshold dictates how many shares are needed to reconstruct the original secret, ensuring individual shares reveal nothing. This approach eliminates single points of failure and enhances security, even with the advent of quantum computing.

This Shamir Secret Sharing plugin for Capacitor has been “battle-tested” in production for a decade, powering almost a million iOS and Android devices as a core component of Vault12 Guard. Vault12 Guard is a mobile app providing decentralized backup and inheritance for crypto wallets and sensitive data. Developers can now access the source code, documentation, and implementation examples on GitHub, allowing integration into new and existing cross-platform applications built with Capacitor.

Capacitor is an open-source, cross-platform runtime allowing developers to build apps for multiple operating systems from a single codebase. The Shamir Secret Sharing plugin integrates with Capacitor’s API and plugin system, bridging web frameworks with native device capabilities. This release aims to provide developers building self-custody and high-assurance applications with tools resistant to future quantum computing threats, according to Vault12 co-founder Blake Commagere.

Vault12’s focus is on solving crypto inheritance challenges with quantum-safe encryption and decentralized social custody. The company has been operating for over a decade and is venture funded, with investments from firms like Winklevoss Capital and Naval Ravikant. Vault12 Guard, the mobile app leveraging this technology, is available in both the Apple App Store and Google Play store.

Developers building self-custody and high-assurance apps need tools that won’t break the moment quantum computing becomes practical.

As the Official Quantum Dog (or hound) by role is to dig out the latest nuggets of quantum goodness. There is so much happening right now in the field of technology, whether AI or the march of robots. But Quantum occupies a special space. Quite literally a special space. A Hilbert space infact, haha! Here I try to provide some of the news that might be considered breaking news in the Quantum Computing space.
