UK Quantum Hackathon 2024 Winners Announced at Warwick University

The National Quantum Computing Centre at the University of Warwick recently hosted its third annual UK Quantum Hackathon from July 22-24, 2024. This event brought together top talent to tackle complex problems in quantum computing. The hackathon aimed to accelerate the development of practical applications for quantum technology. The winners of the 2024 event have been announced, with first place going to a team that developed a use case for risk aggregation evaluation for insurance losses in the event of natural disasters.

Other winning projects included efficient placement of transmitters, receivers, and sensors in networks, and quantum modeling for NHS forecasting. The hackathon was funded through UK Research and Innovation and sponsored by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and the Science and Technology Facilities Council.

The University of Warwick recently played host to the third annual UK Quantum Hackathon, delivered by the National Quantum Computing Centre (NQCC) from July 22-24, 2024. This exciting event brought together talented individuals and teams to tackle real-world problems using quantum computing.

After an intense 48-hour hackathon, the winners of this year’s competition have been announced. Taking top honors was a team that developed a use case for risk aggregation evaluation in insurance losses due to natural disasters. This innovative solution leveraged quantum computing to improve the accuracy and speed of risk assessments, potentially saving lives and reducing economic losses.

The second-place winner focused on efficient placement of transmitters, receivers, and sensors in networks, demonstrating the potential of quantum computing to optimize complex systems. Meanwhile, the third-place team impressed judges with their quantum modeling approach for NHS forecasting, showcasing the potential of quantum computing in healthcare.

In addition to the hackathon itself, participants enjoyed a range of activities, including a team naming competition, which added a touch of humor and creativity to the event.

The UK Quantum Hackathon is part of a broader effort to advance the development of quantum computing in the UK. Funded through UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and sponsored by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), this initiative aims to foster collaboration, innovation, and talent development in the field.

Interested readers can sign up for their quarterly newsletter to stay up-to-date with the latest news and developments from the NQCC. With its focus on cutting-edge research and applications, this event is sure to inspire future generations of quantum innovators.

As the Official Quantum Dog (or hound) by role is to dig out the latest nuggets of quantum goodness. There is so much happening right now in the field of technology, whether AI or the march of robots. But Quantum occupies a special space. Quite literally a special space. A Hilbert space infact, haha! Here I try to provide some of the news that might be considered breaking news in the Quantum Computing space.
