Rigetti and MSU Host 9-Qubit Quantum Computer at QCORE

Rigetti Computing and Montana State University have formalised a collaborative research initiative, culminating in the installation of a 9-qubit Novera Quantum Processing Unit (QPU) at the university’s new QCORE research centre. This installation marks Montana State University as the first academic institution to host an on-premises Rigetti quantum computer, providing researchers with access to a system designed to leverage quantum mechanics for computation. The collaboration will focus on joint research projects in quantum hardware and hybrid quantum systems, alongside initiatives for workforce development and the co-development of enabling technologies, complementing Montana’s existing expertise in quantum system components.

Rigetti Computing, Inc. and Montana State University (MSU) have formalised a collaboration through a Memorandum of Understanding to advance quantum computing research and innovation. This collaboration coincides with the opening of QCORE, MSU’s new research and innovation centre dedicated to quantum and photonic systems integration, and marks MSU as the first academic institution to host an on-premises Rigetti quantum computer. The installation of a 9-qubit Novera Quantum Processing Unit (QPU) at QCORE will provide researchers with access to a processor designed to leverage the principles of quantum mechanics for computation.

Through this collaboration, Rigetti and MSU intend to pursue joint research projects focused on quantum hardware and hybrid quantum systems, as well as initiatives aimed at workforce development and the co-development and testing of enabling technologies. Dr. Subodh Kulkarni, Rigetti’s CEO, emphasised the importance of hands-on access to quantum computing technology for both research and the cultivation of a skilled workforce, anticipating benefits for Montana and the wider global research community.

Dr. Jayne Morrow, CEO of QCORE, highlighted that the Rigetti system introduces a new modality of quantum computing to the university’s research capabilities, complementing Montana’s existing strengths in the production of enabling technologies and critical components for quantum systems, and is expected to foster innovation and contribute to the growth of Montana’s quantum computing ecosystem.

As the Official Quantum Dog (or hound) by role is to dig out the latest nuggets of quantum goodness. There is so much happening right now in the field of technology, whether AI or the march of robots. But Quantum occupies a special space. Quite literally a special space. A Hilbert space infact, haha! Here I try to provide some of the news that might be considered breaking news in the Quantum Computing space.
