Quantum Algorithms Institute Welcomes New Board Chair to Bolster BC’s Quantum Ecosystem

The Quantum Algorithms Institute (QAI) has appointed Kathryn Hayashi as its new Board Chair, a move poised to significantly bolster British Columbia’s growing quantum technology sector. Hayashi brings over 25 years of experience in science commercialization and finance, including a track record of securing more than $200 million in public-private funding for innovation. Most recently President & CEO of TRIUMF Innovations Inc., she will guide QAI as it expands BC’s quantum ecosystem and fosters collaboration. “I’m honoured to step into the Chair role at QAI at such an important moment for quantum in BC and across Canada,” Hayashi stated, adding, “There’s tremendous opportunity ahead to strengthen collaboration across our province and position BC’s quantum community for national impact.”

Kathryn Hayashi Appointed QAI Board Chair

Over $200 million in public-private funding secured throughout her career underscores the financial acumen now guiding the Quantum Algorithms Institute (QAI) with the appointment of Kathryn Hayashi as Board Chair. There, she played a key role in translating research into practical applications and co-led the development of the Canadian Medical Isotope Ecosystem. This expertise positions her to effectively steer QAI’s strategic direction as it expands British Columbia’s quantum ecosystem. Hayashi’s current board positions at Michael Smith Health Research BC and Discovery Parks (now Nimbus Synergies) further highlight her commitment to fostering innovation, and she is a designated CPA, CA.

$200M+ Funding Secured for Science Commercialization

The burgeoning field of quantum technology is increasingly reliant on translating foundational research into viable products, a process demanding both scientific expertise and financial acumen. Quantum Algorithms Institute (QAI) exemplifies this trend, having cultivated an environment primed for commercial success and now bolstered by a leader with a proven track record in securing substantial investment. Across her career, Kathryn Hayashi has successfully obtained over $200 million in public–private funding, specifically to establish and expand innovation-focused organizations. This financial prowess is considered critical as QAI aims to solidify British Columbia’s position within the rapidly evolving quantum landscape.

Hayashi’s experience extends beyond mere fundraising; her previous role as President & CEO of TRIUMF Innovations Inc. involved actively “translating breakthrough research into real-world impact,” a skill set directly applicable to QAI’s goals. She also “co-led the creation of the Canadian Medical Isotope Ecosystem,” demonstrating an ability to build complex, collaborative initiatives. Her appointment signals a strategic shift towards maximizing the commercial potential of quantum algorithms within the province and nationally.

Kathryn’s leadership and impact in science commercialization make this an exciting moment for QAI and BC’s innovation community.

There is so much happening right now in the field of technology, whether AI or the march of robots. Adrian is an expert on how technology can be transformative, especially frontier technologies. But Quantum occupies a special space. Quite literally a special space. A Hilbert space infact, haha! Here I try to provide some of the news that is considered breaking news in the Quantum Computing and Quantum tech space.
