Q*Bird Secures €2.5M to Boost Falqon® Quantum Security, Aims to Revolutionise Global Cybersecurity

Dutch startup Q*Bird has raised €2.5 million to expand its quantum security technology, Falqon. The funding was led by QDNL Participations and Cottonwood Technology Fund, with InnovationQuarter also participating. Falqon, a quantum cryptography product, offers superior security against potential attacks, including those from future quantum computers. QBird is currently testing its technology at the Port of Rotterdam and plans to launch Falqon later this year. The company aims to become a leading supplier of quantum networking equipment globally, according to co-founder and CEO Ingrid Romijn.

Quantum Security Startup Q*Bird Secures €2.5 Million Funding

Q*Bird, a startup specializing in next-generation communications security, has successfully raised €2.5 million in funding to expedite the growth of its quantum security technology. The funding round was co-led by QDNL Participations and Cottonwood Technology Fund, with additional participation from InnovationQuarter.

Q*Bird has developed a unique quantum cryptography product, Falqon, which is grounded in the fundamental laws of nature. This technology offers a high level of security against any form of attack, including those potentially launched by future quantum computers. The startup, established in January 2022, aims to safeguard data communications and digital infrastructure using its patented technology, which it claims surpasses competitors in terms of security and cost.

Q*Bird’s Falqon: A Quantum Leap in Data Security

Falqon, Q*Bird’s quantum cryptography product, is designed to provide a secure foundation for the future ‘quantum internet’. This concept involves quantum computers connecting over long distances around the globe. The startup’s technology is currently being tested in a large-scale trial at the Port of Rotterdam, a crucial component of the European trade economy.

Q*Bird has already secured a launch customer for Falqon, and the product line is expected to officially launch later this year. The company has also signed three other contracts to deploy quantum networks across Europe and has partnered with Eurofiber to enhance the security of its networks and its customers.

Q*Bird’s Vision: Quantum-Secured Data Communications

Ingrid Romijn, co-founder and CEO of Q*Bird, envisions the company becoming a major supplier of quantum networking equipment in Europe, the US, and beyond. “Today, we build devices for quantum-secured data communications. In the future, we will enable general-purpose quantum connectivity by providing new products and seamlessly integrating those with our already existing quantum cryptography network,” Romijn stated.

Compared to other quantum security companies, Q*Bird claims to offer superior upgradability and scalability, with a lower cost per additional user, once the technology is in place. The recent funding will be used to scale up sales of Falqon and develop further products in the quantum security space.

Backing Q*Bird’s Quantum Security Mission

Investors have expressed their support for Q*Bird’s mission. Alain le Loux, General Partner at Cottonwood Technology Fund, praised the company’s pioneering role in quantum cybersecurity and its potential to revolutionize the cybersecurity world.

Ton van ’t Noordende, General Partner at lead investor QDNL Participations, commended Q*Bird for their innovative quantum secure networking technology. He highlighted the growing recognition of the need for secure digital information transfer, particularly in a post-quantum era, and lauded Q*Bird’s technology for its inherent security that is effectively untappable.

Q*Bird’s Impact on Cyber Resilience

Erik van der Zant, Head of Investments at InnovationQuarter, noted that Q*Bird not only builds up critical IP in quantum communication in the region of South Holland, but the company will also further help strengthen the cyber resilience of some of the most critical infrastructure in the Netherlands and Europe such as the Port of Rotterdam. This highlights the potential impact of QBird’s technology on enhancing the security of critical digital infrastructure.
