NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang emphasized the importance of sovereign AI, which allows a country to own its data and the intelligence it produces, at the World Governments Summit in Dubai. He suggested that AI could codify a nation’s culture, history, and common sense. The UAE’s Minister of AI, Omar Al Olama, agreed with Huang’s vision and stated that the UAE is actively creating large language models. Huang also highlighted the role of NVIDIA GPUs in AI and computing innovation. Additionally, Moro Hub, a subsidiary of Digital DEWA, announced plans to build a green data center with NVIDIA.
The Importance of Sovereign AI: A Global Perspective
NVIDIA founder and CEO, Jensen Huang, recently emphasized the significance of sovereign Artificial Intelligence (AI) at the World Governments Summit in Dubai. Sovereign AI refers to a country’s control over its data and the intelligence it generates. Huang highlighted that this concept encapsulates a nation’s culture, societal intelligence, common sense, and history. He further stressed that every country should have the autonomy to produce its own intelligence.
Huang’s viewpoint was echoed by the UAE’s Minister of AI, His Excellency Omar Al Olama, who stated that the UAE is actively working on creating large language models and mobilizing compute. This conversation between Huang and Al Olama was a key feature of the event, which saw participation from over 4,000 delegates from 150 countries.
The UAE’s Transformation into a Global IT Hub
Huang’s visit to the UAE comes at a time when the Gulf State is rapidly transitioning from an energy powerhouse to a global information technology hub. This transformation is part of a broader global tour by Huang, which has included meetings with leaders in Canada, France, India, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, and Vietnam over the past six months.
The Middle East, in general, is expected to gain significantly from AI, with PwC projecting a $320 billion boost to the region’s economy by 2030. The UAE’s aggressive move towards creating large language models and mobilizing compute is a testament to this potential.
AI: A Tool for Ordinary Humans
Huang urged leaders not to be “mystified” by AI. He emphasized that AI’s unprecedented ability to take directions from ordinary humans makes it critical for countries to embrace AI, infusing it with local languages and expertise. In response to a question about how he would approach AI if he were the leader of a developing nation, Huang stressed the importance of building infrastructure. He suggested that the first step would be to codify the language and data of the culture into a large language model.
NVIDIA GPUs: A Platform for Innovation
As AI and accelerated computing have evolved, NVIDIA GPUs have become a platform for numerous innovations. Huang stated that the NVIDIA GPU is the only platform that’s available to everyone on any platform. This ubiquity has not only democratized AI but also facilitated a wave of innovation that spans from cloud computing to autonomous systems and beyond.
The Future of AI and Computing Technologies
Huang also shared his vision for the future of AI and computing technologies. He countered the common advice of encouraging young people to study computer science to compete in the information age. Instead, he suggested that the goal should be to create computing technologies that require no programming and that the programming language should be human. In his view, this would make everyone a programmer, which he described as a “miracle.”
In a move that further highlights the regional momentum behind AI, Moro Hub, a subsidiary of Digital DEWA, announced that it has agreed to build a green data center with NVIDIA. This announcement, along with the discussions on smart mobility, sustainable development, and more, showcased the latest advancements in AI.
