Multiverse Computing Celebrates Major Milestone as Foundational Quantum Finance Paper Exceeds 1,000 Academic Citations

Multiverse Computing is celebrating a landmark achievement today: its foundational 2019 paper, Quantum Computing for Finance: Overview and Prospects, has exceeded 1,000 academic citations. This milestone firmly establishes Multiverse Computing among industry leaders like IBM, D-Wave, and IonQ, but with a unique focus on quantum software – a notoriously competitive field. Authored by Román Orús, Enrique Lizaso, and Samuel Mugel, the paper laid the groundwork for the company’s innovative approach to applying quantum principles to real-world financial challenges. “This paper was the starting point for everything we’ve built since,” said Román Orús, Co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer. The success underscores Multiverse Computing’s evolution from quantum finance research into a leading AI model provider, now tackling AI compression with its CompactifAI technology.

“Quantum Finance” Paper Surpasses 1,000 Academic Citations

This focus sets it apart from many highly cited papers that prioritize quantum hardware development, demonstrating the potential for practical quantum solutions. The paper’s impact is particularly notable given the competitive landscape of quantum software research, and now places Multiverse Computing alongside industry giants like IBM, D-Wave, IonQ and Quantinuum. Following its publication, Multiverse Computing collaborated with institutions including the Bank of Canada, BBVA, and Crédit Agricole, ultimately evolving to develop its CompactifAI technology—a quantum-inspired algorithm for AI model compression—which reduces cost and energy consumption by over half. “Deep physics-based approaches can unlock transformative gains in computation, even without relying on quantum hardware,” Orús added.

The research initially focused on applying quantum principles to finance, but subsequently spurred the development of CompactifAI, the company’s current flagship technology. CompactifAI tackles a critical issue in contemporary AI: the compression of large language models. Partnerships with institutions like the Bank of Canada and BBVA further cemented this progression.

Its compressed AI models use techniques derived from quantum computing, enabling the smooth implementation of large AI language models and other systems with more than half the cost and energy consumption without sacrificing performance.

Multiverse Computing Recognized as Leading AI Innovator

Published from its base in San Sebastián, Spain, the research established an early framework for applying quantum computing to finance, quickly becoming a foundational element for the company itself. The paper’s significance extends beyond mere citation count, distinguishing itself from many highly-cited works that prioritize hardware advancements by focusing on practical quantum software applications.

As the Official Quantum Dog (or hound) by role is to dig out the latest nuggets of quantum goodness. There is so much happening right now in the field of technology, whether AI or the march of robots. But Quantum occupies a special space. Quite literally a special space. A Hilbert space infact, haha! Here I try to provide some of the news that might be considered breaking news in the Quantum Computing space.
