IU Launches Free Generative AI Course for All with IU Login

Indiana University is to launch a free artificial intelligence course, GenAI 101, this autumn, available to all students, faculty and staff with an IU login. The initiative aims to equip participants with essential AI skills deemed critical for contemporary workplaces and to foster a future-ready workforce within Indiana. The curriculum is designed for learners with no prior experience and adopts a self-paced, hands-on approach.

The course is structured around eight modules comprising sixteen lessons, each focusing on practical applications and utilising high-quality visuals. Participants will develop proficiency in twenty key generative AI skills, categorised under three principal areas: Foundational Prompt Engineering – the art of crafting effective instructions for AI models; GenAI as a Thought Partner – utilising AI for brainstorming and problem-solving; and GenAI as a Productivity Amplifier – leveraging AI to enhance efficiency. A key component of the learning experience is Crimson, a real-time, conversational AI learning agent intended to provide on-demand support to participants. The university intends the initiative to prepare students for career success and contribute to the evolving needs of the state’s economy by establishing a foundation of Generative AI literacy across its community.

The GenAI 101 course is structured into eight modules, each containing sixteen concise lessons designed to deliver a comprehensive, self-paced learning experience. The curriculum focuses on the practical application of generative AI, utilising high-quality visuals and real-world examples relevant to the current digital landscape. Participants will acquire proficiency in twenty key generative AI skills, categorised under three principal areas of focus. These areas are: Foundational Prompt Engineering, which concerns the construction of effective instructions to elicit desired responses from AI models; GenAI as a Thought Partner, exploring the use of AI for collaborative brainstorming and complex problem-solving; and GenAI as a Productivity Amplifier, demonstrating how AI tools can be leveraged to enhance efficiency in various tasks. The course materials are designed to be accessible to learners with no prior experience in artificial intelligence, providing a foundation in Generative AI literacy applicable across diverse fields. Furthermore, learners will benefit from on-demand support provided by Crimson, a real-time, conversational AI learning agent integrated into the course platform.

Dr. Donovan is a futurist and technology writer covering the quantum revolution. Where classical computers manipulate bits that are either on or off, quantum machines exploit superposition and entanglement to process information in ways that classical physics cannot. Dr. Donovan tracks the full quantum landscape: fault-tolerant computing, photonic and superconducting architectures, post-quantum cryptography, and the geopolitical race between nations and corporations to achieve quantum advantage. The decisions being made now, in research labs and government offices around the world, will determine who controls the most powerful computers ever built.
