The second law, or the “law of obedience,” dictates that a robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law. The law’s focus on obedience has also raised questions about accountability and responsibility in AI systems, particularly in situations where robots may be used for tasks that involve a high degree of autonomy (Floridi, 2015).

The third law, or the “law of existence,” states that a robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law. This principle has been influential in the development of self-sustaining systems, such as those used in space exploration and environmental monitoring (NASA, 2020). The law’s emphasis on self-preservation has also raised questions about the potential for robots to develop their own goals and motivations, potentially leading to conflicts with human values and interests (Russell & Norvig, 2003).

Asimov’s robotic vision has not only shaped the development of AI and robotics but has also had a broader impact on society, influencing public discourse and policy debates about the ethics and governance of emerging technologies. The Three Laws have been cited in various contexts, including discussions around AI safety, accountability, and transparency (European Parliament, 2017).

The legacy of Asimov’s robotic vision continues to be felt today, with many researchers and policymakers drawing on his ideas as they navigate the complexities of developing and deploying AI systems.
