India has taken a significant leap forward in weather forecasting and climate research with the inauguration of two supercomputers at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) in Pune and the National Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecast (NCMRWF) in Noida. The Honourable Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, inaugurated these systems, which were designed and delivered by Eviden, a business leader in advanced computing and part of the Atos Group.
The two supercomputers, named ARKA and Arunika, boast a combined power of up to 21.91 Petaflops and utilize Eviden’s patented Direct Liquid Cooling technology for efficient cooling. The systems were created in partnership with AMD, Nvidia, and DDN, and feature dedicated storage capacities of 33 Petabytes and 24 Petabytes respectively.
Emmanuel Le Roux, Head of Big Data and Security at Eviden, expressed pride in working with the Ministry of Earth Sciences institutions to provide best-in-class technologies for critical projects. Dr. M. Ravichandran, Secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, highlighted the importance of accurate weather forecasting and the need for high-performance computing solutions like those provided by Eviden.
Supercomputing for Weather and Climate Research in India
The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) and the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecast (NCMRWF) have recently inaugurated two supercomputers, ARKA and Arunika, respectively, to enhance their weather and climate research capabilities. These systems, delivered by Eviden, a business leader in advanced computing, boast a combined power of up to 21.91 Petaflops and utilize patented Direct Liquid Cooling technology for efficient cooling.
The IITM system, ARKA, is equipped with a compute power of 11.77 Petaflops and 33 Petabytes of storage, while the NCMRWF System, Arunika, has a compute power of 8.24 Petaflops with 24 Petabytes of storage. Additionally, a dedicated standalone system for Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) applications has been installed, with a capacity of 1.9 Petaflops. These systems are designed to support critical projects of national importance, such as weather modeling and climate research.
The integration of technologies from AMD, Nvidia, and DDN has enabled the creation of these high-performance computing systems. Eviden’s expertise in delivering advanced supercomputing solutions for meteorological services has been instrumental in this project. The Honourable Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, inaugurated the supercomputers at IITM and NCMRWF, marking a significant milestone in India’s pursuit of advancing its weather and climate research capabilities.
High-Performance Computing for Accurate Weather Forecasting
Accurate weather forecasting is computationally intensive and demands high-performance computing for higher resolution and accurate forecasts. The newly inaugurated supercomputers at IITM and NCMRWF are designed to provide the necessary computational power to support this goal. With their combined power of up to 21.91 Petaflops, these systems can process large amounts of data quickly and efficiently, enabling researchers to run complex weather models and simulations.
The use of high-performance computing in meteorological services is critical for achieving superior energy efficiency. Eviden’s strong record in delivering advanced supercomputing solutions has been instrumental in this project. The company’s expertise in integrating technologies from leading manufacturers has enabled the creation of systems that can support the demanding requirements of weather and climate research.
