European Survey Reveals Growing Public Excitement for Quantum Technology

Yougov published the first European survey on public attitudes towards quantum science on World Quantum Day (14th April 2025). The survey revealed high awareness in France and Germany, with most adults aware of quantum technology.

Public excitement is highest for healthcare applications, followed closely by energy, cybersecurity, and climate change initiatives. The European Union is significantly investing in this field through the Quantum Flagship programme. This study underscores a growing curiosity and optimism among the public regarding the potential of quantum technologies to address key societal challenges.

World Quantum Day 2025 Survey Publication

The publication of the first European survey on public attitudes towards quantum science and technology coincided with World Quantum Day 2025. Conducted by YouGov, the survey involved 3,093 adults across France and Germany, revealing high levels of awareness in both countries—73% in France and 81% in Germany.

Public excitement for quantum applications was highest in healthcare, with 53% expressing interest, followed by energy (47%), cybersecurity (44%), and climate change (41%). These findings underscore the potential societal impact of quantum technologies across various sectors.

Europe’s commitment to advancing quantum technology is evident through initiatives like the Quantum Flagship programme, which has allocated 1 billion euros over ten years. Additionally, the Chips Act and EuroHPC Joint Undertaking further support the development and industrialization of quantum technologies, reinforcing Europe’s leadership in this field.

Public Awareness And Excitement In France And Germany

The survey revealed high levels of public awareness regarding quantum technology in both France and Germany. In France, 73% of respondents indicated awareness, while in Germany, this figure rose to 81%. These findings underscore a strong foundation for engagement with quantum science across these two European nations.

Public excitement for quantum applications was most pronounced in healthcare, where 53% expressed interest, followed by energy (47%), cybersecurity (44%), and climate change (41%). This indicates that the potential societal benefits of quantum technology are widely recognized and prioritized in both countries.

World Quantum Day 2025 Initiatives And Projects

Europe’s commitment to advancing quantum research is evident through initiatives like the Quantum Flagship programme, which has allocated €1 billion over ten years. Additionally, the Chips Act and EuroHPC Joint Undertaking further support the development and industrialization of quantum technologies, reinforcing Europe’s leadership in this field.

The survey results reflect a collective effort to promote public awareness and engagement with quantum science, aligning with broader European goals to drive technological advancement and economic growth. These findings highlight Europe’s strategic focus on harnessing quantum technology for real-world applications, positioning it as a global leader in the field.

Dr. Donovan is a futurist and technology writer covering the quantum revolution. Where classical computers manipulate bits that are either on or off, quantum machines exploit superposition and entanglement to process information in ways that classical physics cannot. Dr. Donovan tracks the full quantum landscape: fault-tolerant computing, photonic and superconducting architectures, post-quantum cryptography, and the geopolitical race between nations and corporations to achieve quantum advantage. The decisions being made now, in research labs and government offices around the world, will determine who controls the most powerful computers ever built.
