Diraq Secures $20M NRFC Investment to Lead Utility-Scale Quantum Computing

Australia is poised to become a quantum powerhouse thanks to a $20 million investment secured by Diraq, a company leading the global race to build utility-scale quantum computers. The National Reconstruction Fund Corporation (NRFC) is backing Diraq’s ambition to deliver its first product – a quantum computer capable of “genuine quantum advantage” – by 2029. This strategic investment will anchor advanced manufacturing in Australia and accelerate Diraq’s commercial path to market, leveraging its unique silicon-based qubit technology to create compact, cost-and-energy efficient computers. “We are at a pivotal moment where years of breakthrough research is transitioning into a commercial reality that will redefine future computing,” says Diraq Founder & CEO Andrew Dzurak, highlighting the significance of this national boost for the burgeoning quantum industry.

NRFC’s $20 Million Investment Anchors Diraq’s Manufacturing

A $20 million equity investment from the National Reconstruction Fund Corporation (NRFC) is bolstering Diraq’s efforts to establish advanced manufacturing capabilities within Australia and accelerate its path toward commercializing utility-scale quantum computing. Founded in 2022 as a spin-out from UNSW Sydney, Diraq currently employs over 70 staff and PhD students locally, a number poised to grow significantly with the NRFC funding, creating new jobs in research, development, and commercialisation. Diraq’s technology centres on silicon-based qubits, enabling the placement of “millions of qubits on a single chip,” a feat that promises compact, energy-efficient computers.

The investment is particularly significant as Australia strengthens its critical technology infrastructure, especially its rapidly expanding data centre sector; Diraq’s computers are designed for seamless integration with these existing facilities. NRFC CEO David Gall stated, “Australia has the potential to lead the world in quantum computing and Diraq’s…combination of silicon-based qubits will revolutionise the industry.”

Silicon-Based Qubits Enable Scalable Quantum Computing

Silicon-based qubits are emerging as a pivotal technology for achieving scalable quantum computing, and Diraq is positioned at the forefront of this advancement. This approach contrasts sharply with other quantum methods requiring exotic materials or extensive infrastructure, as Diraq’s system scales effectively by leveraging the established multi-trillion-dollar silicon supply chain. “At Main Sequence, we look for ‘unfair advantages’,” said Main Sequence Ventures Investment Manager Alejandra Romero, highlighting this key differentiator. locations, including recent operations launched in Melbourne.

The funding will anchor advanced manufacturing operations within Australia, bolstering the nation’s position in the burgeoning quantum computing landscape.

We are at a pivotal moment where years of breakthrough research is transitioning into a commercial reality that will redefine future computing. Australia has always been a quantum powerhouse in the lab and, with the NRFC’s backing, we are ensuring it becomes a quantum powerhouse in the market.

There is so much happening right now in the field of technology, whether AI or the march of robots. Adrian is an expert on how technology can be transformative, especially frontier technologies. But Quantum occupies a special space. Quite literally a special space. A Hilbert space infact, haha! Here I try to provide some of the news that is considered breaking news in the Quantum Computing and Quantum tech space.
