D-Wave Quantum Joins Chicago Exchange to Advance Industry Adoption

D-Wave Quantum Inc., a leading provider of quantum computing systems, software, and services, has joined the Chicago Quantum Exchange (CQE) as a corporate partner to further quantum education and industry adoption efforts. The company aims to engage with the CQE community on materials science research, quantum education, and the development of practical optimization use cases, including for the manufacturing and logistics industries.

David Awschalom, director of the Chicago Quantum Exchange, emphasized the need to accelerate industry adoption and ensure access to education programs geared toward real-world applications. D-Wave’s CEO, Dr. Alan Baratz, highlighted the company’s alignment with the CQE’s mission to foster a Midwest-based quantum community that advances quantum science, trains the future quantum workforce, and drives the quantum economy. The collaboration is expected to support the development of practical optimization use cases, including for logistics and manufacturing, materials sciences, mobility, supply chain management, and more.

Collaboration in Quantum Computing: D-Wave Joins the Chicago Quantum Exchange

The Chicago Quantum Exchange (CQE) has welcomed D-Wave Quantum Inc. as a corporate partner, marking a significant collaboration in the field of quantum computing. This partnership aims to accelerate industry adoption and education efforts, ultimately driving the development of practical optimization use cases.

D-Wave, a pioneer in the development and delivery of quantum computing systems, software, and services, brings its expertise in solving complex computational problems to the table. The company’s technology has been used by various industries, including government, education, manufacturing, logistics, financial services, life sciences, retail, and more. By joining forces with the CQE, D-Wave seeks to engage with the community on materials science research, quantum education, and the development of practical optimization use cases.

The CQE, based at the University of Chicago, is anchored by prominent institutions such as the US Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory and Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The exchange includes around 50 corporate, international, nonprofit, and regional partners, all working together to advance quantum science, train the future quantum workforce, and drive the quantum economy.

Quantum Computing Systems: D-Wave’s Expertise

D-Wave is developing two types of superconducting quantum computers: annealing systems, currently at 5,000+-qubits, and gate-based systems. The company offers cloud access to its current annealing quantum computing systems, as well as open-source software and support services for customers across various sectors.

As the world’s first commercial supplier of quantum computers, D-Wave has been at the forefront of quantum innovation, education, and adoption. Its efforts are well aligned with the CQE’s mission, making this partnership a natural fit. By working together, D-Wave and the CQE aim to support the development of practical optimization use cases, including for the manufacturing and logistics industries.

Quantum Education and Workforce Development

The collaboration between D-Wave and the CQE also focuses on quantum education and workforce development. The CQE’s mission is to foster a Midwest-based quantum community that advances quantum science, trains the future quantum workforce, and drives the quantum economy. By joining forces, D-Wave and the CQE can accelerate industry adoption and ensure that the future quantum workforce has access to education programs geared toward real-world applications.

David Awschalom, the Liew Family Professor in Molecular Engineering and Physics at the University of Chicago and the director of the Chicago Quantum Exchange, emphasized the importance of accelerating industry adoption and ensuring that the future quantum workforce has access to education programs. This collaboration is a significant step towards realizing this vision.

Regional Impact: Driving the Quantum Economy

The partnership between D-Wave and the CQE is expected to have a significant regional impact, driving the development of the quantum economy in the Midwest. Governor J.B. Pritzker announced a multi-year plan to support quantum commercialization in the region, and D-Wave’s technology, products, and training are expected to play a role in these efforts.

Both MxD, a Chicago-based digital manufacturing innovation center, and the CQE are members of The Bloch Quantum Tech Hub. This hub is focused on providing solutions for the domestic defense industrial base, and D-Wave’s quantum computing technologies can be used by MxD members to solve optimization problems in logistics and manufacturing, materials sciences, mobility, supply chain management, and more.

The collaboration between D-Wave and the CQE marks a significant step towards driving the development of the quantum economy in the Midwest, with far-reaching implications for industries across the region.
