In a boost for Italy’s technological landscape, Cineca, one of the country’s leading computing centers, has announced an agreement with IQM Quantum Computers to house the most powerful quantum computer in the nation. The IQM Radiance 54-qubit superconducting quantum computer is set for delivery and integration into Leonardo, one of the world’s fastest supercomputers, in the fourth quarter of 2025. This move marks a significant milestone for Cineca and Italy within the global quantum ecosystem.
The installation will mark Cineca’s first on-premises quantum computer, further solidifying its status as an international hub for scientific computing. IQM, a global leader in superconducting quantum computers, aims to support Cineca’s research initiatives and provide Italian scientists with advanced quantum computing platforms to tackle complex scientific challenges.
The arrival of the IQM Radiance 54 quantum computer is expected to accelerate opportunities for Cineca’s consortium members and the broader ecosystem it serves. It offers a cutting-edge platform for exploring novel quantum use cases that cannot be emulated on classical hardware. This development underscores Italy’s commitment to advancing its position in the rapidly evolving field of quantum computing.
Italian supercomputing centre Cineca has agreed with the global leader in superconducting quantum computers, IQM Quantum Computers. The deal will see the installation of IQM Radiance 54-qubit quantum computer, set to be Italy’s most powerful quantum system, by Q4 2025. This development marks a milestone for Italy and the global quantum ecosystem.
The IQM Radiance quantum computer, powered by a 54-qubit quantum processing unit (QPU), will be integrated into Leonardo, one of the world’s fastest supercomputers, in Bologna, Italy. This installation will mark Cineca’s first on-premises quantum computer, further solidifying its position as a global hub for scientific computing.
IQM aims to support Cineca’s research initiatives and provide Italian scientists with the most advanced quantum computer platform. The system is expected to be used for optimisation of quantum applications, quantum cryptography, quantum communication, and artificial intelligence quantum algorithms.
Alessandra Poggiani, Director General of Cineca, expressed her excitement about the development, stating, “The arrival of the new IQM Radiance 54 quantum computer represents a groundbreaking development for Cineca.” She further added, “We are confident that our work in quantum computing can quickly translate into new opportunities, benefiting our consortium members and the entire ecosystem we serve.”
Mikko Välimäki, Co-CEO at IQM Quantum Computers, expressed his delight about contributing to the growth of the quantum ecosystem in Italy. He stated, “Our 54-qubit quantum computer provides a state-of-the-art platform for researchers and developers to explore novel quantum use cases, which cannot be emulated on any classical hardware.”
Cineca is one of Italy’s largest computing centers, globally recognized for its leadership in High-Performance Computing (HPC). It serves as a crucial provider of solutions and services for universities, research centers, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of University and Research, and other institutions.
