Banco Sabadell Adopts Quantum Safe cryptography technology solutions

Banco Sabadell has collaborated with Accenture and QuSecure to advance quantum safe infrastructure by exploring the adoption of Post Quantum Cryptography technologies. This project aims to mitigate risks associated with quantum computing and bolster resistance to quantum attacks.

According to Joan Puig, Group CISO of Banco Sabadell, cryptography plays a crucial role in banking and it is essential to transition to quantum safe cryptography with agility and efficiency. The collaboration resulted in a comprehensive understanding of the steps required for the bank to become quantum resilient.

Tom Patterson, Emerging Technology Security lead at Accenture, and Elizabeth Green, SVP of Customers and Ecosystems at QuSecure, also commented on the project, highlighting the importance of transitioning to quantum safe technologies incorporating the latest NIST PQC standards. The rise of quantum computing challenges modern day cryptography, making it crucial for organizations to prepare and adapt cryptographic methods to withstand the power of quantum technologies.

Introduction to Quantum-Safe Infrastructure

The advent of quantum computing poses significant risks to modern-day cryptography, which is essential for securing digital communications and transactions. To mitigate these risks, Banco Sabadell has collaborated with Accenture and QuSecure on a project to explore the adoption of Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) technologies in the bank’s infrastructure. This project aims to bolster resistance to quantum attacks by leveraging QuSecure’s software for crypto agility and open-source libraries to modernize and orchestrate encryption.

The collaboration between Banco Sabadell, Accenture, and QuSecure resulted in a comprehensive understanding of the steps required for the bank to become quantum-resilient and provided an initial estimation of how quantum security technologies can be adopted. The successful completion of the four-month project demonstrates the organization’s commitment to staying ahead of advancements in the quantum security race. According to Joan Puig, Group CISO of Banco Sabadell, “Cryptography plays a crucial role in banking, securing processes such as payments, digital interactions with customers and communications with market infrastructure. It is also essential for protecting sensitive information.”

The transition to crypto agility must start immediately and is a long-term strategy, not a one-time implementation, according to the Financial Services Information Sharing and Analysis Center (FS-ISAC). This project highlights the importance of proactive planning and collaboration in addressing the challenges posed by quantum computing. By working together, organizations can develop effective strategies for transitioning to quantum-safe technologies and ensuring the integrity and confidentiality of digital communications.

The rise of quantum computing challenges modern-day cryptography, and preparing and adapting cryptographic methods to withstand the power of quantum technologies involves developing quantum-resistant algorithms and reevaluating current security protocols. Proactively addressing these concerns is crucial for maintaining the integrity and confidentiality of digital communications in the quantum era. The collaboration between Banco Sabadell, Accenture, and QuSecure demonstrates a commitment to staying ahead of advancements in the quantum security race and ensuring the long-term security of sensitive information.

Post-Quantum Cryptography Technologies

Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) technologies are designed to be resistant to attacks by both classical and quantum computers. These technologies use algorithms that are based on mathematical problems that are difficult for both classical and quantum computers to solve, such as lattice-based cryptography, code-based cryptography, and hash-based signatures. PQC technologies are essential for ensuring the long-term security of digital communications and transactions, as they provide a secure way to encrypt and decrypt data.

The QuProtect platform, developed by QuSecure, is an example of a PQC technology that requires no quantum technologies to defend against quantum, AI, and classical threats to encryption. This platform provides an easy transition path to quantum resiliency anytime, anywhere, on any device, and across any organization. The QuProtect solution is the industry’s first cryptographic agility platform to facilitate upgrades to PQC and beyond, making it an essential tool for organizations looking to transition to quantum-safe technologies.

The adoption of PQC technologies is critical for maintaining the integrity and confidentiality of digital communications in the quantum era. As quantum computing becomes more prevalent, the risk of quantum attacks on classical cryptography will increase, making it essential for organizations to develop effective strategies for transitioning to quantum-safe technologies. By leveraging PQC technologies, such as the QuProtect platform, organizations can ensure the long-term security of sensitive information and maintain the trust of their customers and stakeholders.

Collaboration and Planning

The collaboration between Banco Sabadell, Accenture, and QuSecure highlights the importance of proactive planning and collaboration in addressing the challenges posed by quantum computing. By working together, organizations can develop effective strategies for transitioning to quantum-safe technologies and ensuring the integrity and confidentiality of digital communications. The successful completion of the four-month project demonstrates the value of collaboration and planning in addressing the complex challenges posed by quantum computing.

The Financial Services Information Sharing and Analysis Center (FS-ISAC) emphasizes that the transition to crypto agility must start immediately and is a long-term strategy, not a one-time implementation. This requires organizations to develop a comprehensive plan for transitioning to quantum-safe technologies, including the adoption of PQC technologies, such as the QuProtect platform. By working together and developing effective plans, organizations can ensure the long-term security of sensitive information and maintain the trust of their customers and stakeholders.
