Coral reefs, often called the “rainforests of the sea,” are facing an unprecedented crisis. With 75% of reefs worldwide experiencing bleaching-level heat stress over the past two years, the future of these ecosystems looks increasingly bleak. The Great Barrier Reef (GBR), one of Australia’s most significant ecological and tourism assets, has been severely impacted by bleaching events since 2016, exacerbated by crown-of-thorns starfish outbreaks and coastal development. In a bid to save the world’s coral reefs from further decline, Australian researchers are designing a global real-time monitoring system that leverages artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Dr. Abdullahi Chowdhury, UniSA data analyst and lead researcher, notes that current models analyze substantial data on reef health but exist in silos. “At the moment we have separate models that analyze data on bleaching levels, disease incidence, juvenile coral density, and reef fish abundance, but these datasets are not integrated,” Dr. Chowdhury explains. The integration of AI will allow for real-time predictions, providing environmental scientists with a holistic view of reef health.
