AMD and Fujitsu Partner to Develop Sustainable AI Computing Platforms

AMD and Fujitsu Limited have announced a strategic partnership to develop more sustainable computing infrastructure, aiming to accelerate open-source AI initiatives. The collaboration will focus on engineering, ecosystems, and business, combining Fujitsu’s advanced CPU technology with AMD’s industry-leading GPU technology. The goal is to create innovative computing platforms for AI and high-performance computing by 2027.

This partnership brings together two world-leading technologies to promote open-source AI software optimized for their AI computing platforms. Vivek Mahajan, Corporate Vice President of Fujitsu, and Phil Guido, Executive Vice President of AMD, commented on the significance of this partnership in achieving sustainable computing platforms. The collaboration will also involve joint marketing efforts and co-creation with customers to offer these AI computing platforms globally.

Strategic Partnership for Sustainable Computing Infrastructure

The memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed between AMD and Fujitsu Limited marks a significant milestone in the development of sustainable computing infrastructure. This strategic partnership aims to create open-source AI and high-performance computing (HPC) platforms that are energy efficient, flexible, and scalable. The collaboration will focus on three key areas: engineering, ecosystems, and business, bringing together Fujitsu’s advanced CPU technology with AMD’s industry-leading GPU technology.

The partnership seeks to address the growing demand for optimized architectures in various price and power performance configurations, driven by the rapid spread of AI, including generative AI. Cloud service providers and end-users are seeking ways to reduce their data center total cost of ownership while maintaining high-performance capabilities. The collaboration between AMD and Fujitsu aims to provide customers with additional choices to achieve large-scale AI workload processing while reducing energy consumption.

Innovative Computing Platforms for AI and HPC

The joint development of innovative computing platforms for AI and HPC is a key objective of the partnership. By 2027, Fujitsu and AMD aim to develop platforms that combine the strengths of their respective technologies. The FUJITSU-MONAKA processor, an Arm-based next-generation processor, will be paired with AMD Instinct accelerators to provide customers with a high-performance and low-power consumption solution.

The collaboration will also focus on enhancing the open-source AI/HPC software stack for GPUs, based on AMD ROCm software, and Fujitsu’s Arm-based FUJITSU-MONAKA software. This will enable the development of optimized AI software that can be utilized by many companies, promoting a more sustainable computing infrastructure.

Expanding the Ecosystem and Promoting Sustainable AI

The partnership between AMD and Fujitsu extends beyond technology development to include marketing and co-creation with customers. The two companies will collaborate on building an open and more sustainable AI/HPC platform ecosystem, including a joint customer center. This ecosystem will enable the expansion of AI use cases and promote the societal implementation of AI.

Through this collaboration, Fujitsu and AMD are bringing their respective world-leading technologies together to accelerate open-source AI initiatives. By offering more sustainable options in both hardware and software, they aim to reduce the power consumed by data centers and promote a more environmentally friendly computing infrastructure.

Commitment to Innovation and Sustainability

The strategic partnership between AMD and Fujitsu underscores their commitment to innovation and sustainability. The collaboration highlights the importance of local partnerships and expertise, particularly in Japan, where there is a strong focus on technological leadership and commitment to sustainability.

As Phil Guido, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer at AMD, noted, “Our strategic partnership with Fujitsu not only underscores our commitment to innovation but also highlights our dedication to Japan, where we recognize the importance of local partnerships and expertise.”

Vivek Guido’s comments were echoed by Vivek Guido, who emphasized that “this partnership is an important step forward in accelerating Fujitsu’s efforts to achieve a sustainable society.” The collaboration between AMD and Fujitsu marks a significant milestone in the development of sustainable computing infrastructure, with far-reaching implications for the environment and society as a whole.

As the Official Quantum Dog (or hound) by role is to dig out the latest nuggets of quantum goodness. There is so much happening right now in the field of technology, whether AI or the march of robots. But Quantum occupies a special space. Quite literally a special space. A Hilbert space infact, haha! Here I try to provide some of the news that might be considered breaking news in the Quantum Computing space.
